APDT NZ imageBoth Blair and Natalie went to Wellington for the Association of Pet Dog Trainer's Conference. (APDT NZ)

Early June had the Naked Dog team enjoying a fabulous weekend of ‘talking dog’ when we attended the Association of Pet Dog Trainers New Zealand 2011 Annual Conference in Wellington.   We were there promoting to NZ dog community, the dogonsafe  program.

Odd escaping to Wellington to avoid earthquakes, but it still remained eventful, our room at the Brentwood was great until the toilet failed at midnight (phew) and then at 1:30am seventeen fire and emergency appliances rushed to one of the weekend’s arsons. At least the food and the presentations were excellent and the networking invaluable.

Memorable presentations by Dr Gabrielle Carter, a Vet and Behaviour specialist on understanding aggression complimented Teresa Crich’s informed talk on the role of trust in training and playgroups and their importance in dog socialisation and enrichment.  We also joined up via skype with one of the world’s most prolific canine behaviour authors, Jean Donaldson and got the skinny on Dogs that Bully other Dogs.Picture of us at our Tradeshow booth  --> go to bottom left hand corner

Doggone Safe Event Sunday May 15, it was the International Dog Bite Prevention Week, and Blair and Natalie have done their bite to celebrate the "500 000 dogs that never bite anyone today"! We must keep our dog bites in perspective, and the best way of keeping our "mokapuna" safe is to teach the kids and their parents what to look for in a stressed dog. Check out the dog videos in this newsletter. Excellent examples of what we teach!

Although we didn't have a mob of kids come to the event, we did put out a Press Release Teach a Child, Save a Dog and this generated a lot of interest!

Campbell Live did an interview Protecting your children against vicious dog attacks- Video included Donelle Whiu does a great job showing viewers how to approach a dog. Good on her for telling our story!

Please remember that our Life Skills Classes are for those dogs that don't have reactive issues to other dogs, and are calm enough to pay attention. If your dog is having trouble in class, you will be frustrated, and your dog will too. Why not get us to your house and do a private consult and get you started teaching your dog in a less distractive environment!

5. Training Tips
--------------

Dog says: "Invent mentally stimulating activities for me."
Bored dogs will find things to amuse themselves, such as digging holes, barking or getting into the rubbish. The more you keep you dog's mind and body occupied, the happier he will be. Teach your dog tricks or basic manners to keep his mind and learning capacity sharp. And if you don't have any ideas there is plenty of excellent and dogdurable challenges, check over our Online Store- IQ Dog Toys

Tug-a-Jug picture
The picture that you see is a Tug-A-Jug. One of these was awarded to a Wellington APDTNZ attendee - she guessed closest to it containing 200 dog treats, motivates play and lasts for hours -  Check this link and watch a video on how this works!
