Wag'N'Walk was held in December in Hagley Parl (Dec 4). It was the first year that this event was held, and the money that was raised went to Paws Justice. Lots and lots of prizes including our own. The winner of our $50 worth of dog toys goes to..... Oscar the dog who's a Jack Russell, owner Kayt Fitzpatrick. Kayt please email us for your voucher to spend on our range of dog toys at IQ Dog Toys (www.iqdogtoys.co.nz)
Natalie went to see Dr. Patricia McConnell in Auckland. Although she went to listen to her seminars at the Atlanta's APDT Conference in October, this was a sneak preview of what proved to be a very rewarding and eductional experience in her 2 day workshop. Dr McConnell spoke about dog-dog aggression, and how to help our dogs resolved their issues. Some of her training tips were quite helpful. We do ensure that we keep up to date with the latest training methods.
Fetch Magazine There is an article in the latest Fetch Magazine (Dec '10) which talks about harnesses. We were contacted and asked our expertise in using harnesses and why. Of course, if you don't have time or expertise to train, we recommend the best quick fix is to use a harness that is designed to allow your dog the freedom to make good choices (allowing you to reward desirable behaviours) while using the science of design to passively to stop a dog pulling and make your walk enjoyable for you and your canine friend. see Front End harness

3. Rehoming
--------------
We have successfully rehomed all of our three dogs. Max the Springer Spaniel went to a lovely couple in Dunedin, Bones the black lab is living near the sea in Christchurch, and Murphy, our Bearded Collie, has found a home in Murchison where he can run and bark to his hearts content. If you know someone that needs their dog rehome, tell them to give us a call.

4. Homestay Pictures
--------------
We have had a great Christmas as there was a melange of dogs that have come to stay with us while their owners went to travel-- some went overseas, others went to the South, and more went to the North Island.
We have a dogfriendly bach at the mouth of the Selwyn on Lake Ellesmere where some of our homestay dogs spent some time with us. Beautiful area for fishing, kayaking, and of course talking to our new neighbours. Some of our dogs had a paddle with us in our kayaks, others met other dogs, and some dogs swam, and ran, and swam! Check out the pictures here.
All dogs had a good time except those that had the unfortunate experience of snagging some rye grass seed (awns) between their paws. Those areas are now restricted for the dogs but it's only for a couple of months while the seedheads are problematic.

5. Training Tip
--------------
Your dog tells you:"Find ways to keep me busy." Dogs need interesting and fun activities. Look for toys that require some thinking to make them work. Play hide and seek with food treats, toys or people. Consider activities or training that make use of your dog's natural abilities such as retrieving, herding, or scenting.
We sell these dog toys through our online store- IQ Dog Toys.co.nz if you want a dog toy that is 'guaranteed durable!

We would like to thank everyone who has come to our dog training, or visited us at a dog event, or even just emailed us an update on their dogs' progress.
We hope that this coming year you'll be taking your dog away with you on holidays, but if you can't, we will be here to enjoy your dog's company for you :)
Apologies for all those dogs who couldn't come to stay this past Christmas. We have been booked out! |
