Training Tip

At the initial stage, do not over burden the dog with many commands as they might become frustrating and confusing for their brains. Always remember to respect the behaviour of your dog and plan your training accordingly.

Did Dogs Gain Their Social Intelligence by Accident? If your attention is on something, or if your attention is directed to somewhere, dogs seem to be able to turn their attention onto that thing or location as well. Amazingly, dogs may be better at this than primates (including our nearest cousins, the chimpanzees) and better than their nearest cousins, wild wolves.

Jennifer Arnold's Through a Dog's Eyes -- you may have seen the film on PBS (www.pbs.org/dogs-eyes) dealing with assistance dogs. Arnold was the founder of Canine Assistants in GA, and seems to have some chops for training and analyzing behaviour. She -- and the book -- is a mixture of sentiments or sentimentalities.
On the one hand, Arnold is always relating anecdotes in which she tries to dispel people's misconceptions about dogs, such as some woman's notion that her dog understands about not eating off the bench or a mother's failure to understand why her dog munches the kids' crayons. Dogs, she explains, don't have the intellectual capacity for analyzing and accepting such social rules. And yet, Arnold seems to have an inexorable conviction that dogs possess a saint-like *emotional* sensitivity and empathetic comprehension. (Review written by Geoff Stern)
