School News

Victoria StilwellKyra SundanceNatalie is back from her extended trip to Canada. She stayed longer due to a family death. However, she did take some time out to attend the 17th Annual Association of Pet Dog Trainers Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. This lasted 5days! Doggie heaven for her. Amazing speakers, and our school is now in the minds of overseas trainers! Of course, I couldn't resist talking with Victoria Stilwell. It's Me or the Dog Fame.

One of the speakers was Dr. Patricia McConnell. She has a radio show, Calling All Pets, and has her TV show Petline played on Animal Planet. She is the author of thirteen books on training and behavioral problems, as well as the critically acclaimed books: The Other End of the Leash (translated now into 13 languages), For the Love of a Dog, and Tales of Two Species. Dr. McConnell will in Auckland Nov 25 and 26, and Natalie will be attending this workshop titled Dog-Dog Aggression.

NakedDog Classes
--------------

KinderPuppy classes: Starts the first Thursday evening of December. We have had a lot of interest. Most places don't give puppy classes during December and January, BUT WE DO! Puppy socialisation is so important. Remember to download the free e-book on our Kinderpuppy page.

Older Dog Classes: Everyone is welcome on Thursdays at 6:30pm. Some of the concepts we teach are around self-control, watching the owner, sit/down/stand, Zen exercises, loose leash walking and you have the opportunity to ask any questions that you might have!
Remember to arrive 5 or 10 minutes before to walk your dog, and get him/her used to their environments. We have the opportunity of using Porritt Park which is in front of the Boys Scouts. This is an excellent park to practice our recall.

We have been asked to offer our classes on other nights, and on the weekend. Interest in commencing a Sunday morning class requires another two dogs to make it viable. Keep a look out for our new days, especially with summer's daylight saving 'evenings are good' on its way.

Rehoming
--------------

We have two dogs to rehome. One is Max, a Springer Spaniel, and Bones, the black lab. If you know someone looking for a dog, tell them to have a look on our Rehome Webpage. You'll see pictures of Max and Bones. We'll certainly miss them when we find them a new home.

Training Tip
--------------

Pet me because you love me, but sometimes have me earn it. Allowing your dog to demand patting by barking, jumping, or pawing at you creates 'the dog who must be obeyed'. This is a red flag that problems exist in your relationship. Have your dog sit, lie down, shake hands, or perform a trick before giving him what he wants.

Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving With so many Christchurch people still to have their houses rebuilt and with lots of people shifting about, here is a story about moving house that you'll find hard not to laugh at. The artwork is outstanding.

Regretting the "Labradoodle" How does it feel to invent something you later regret?

Chase This, Not That! (Patricia McConnell) A dog’s love of a good chase is both a blessing and a curse. It makes playing with them extra fun; what a joy it is to play fetch and chase with some dogs! And it’s got a dark side too–chasers love to chase cats, cars, joggers and bicyclists, and that doesn’t tend to work out so well for all involved.

Doggy Reading
-------------------

Gag book in time for Xmas Physics for Dogs: A Crash Course in Catching Cats, Frisbees, and Cars by John-Andrew Sandbrook with detailed mathematical formulas explaining how to get food off the counter, drink out of the toilet, eat a shoe, open a trash can, poop strategically, and so on. Some very funny satire on various conventional admonitions in trng, including agility and herding. I'm not smart enough to get any "inside" jokes in the formulas. But the text is funny enough. Any of my dawggs could have been consultants for this book. (Review by Geof Stern)
