Kinderpuppy pup

Dr. Ian Dunbar states, “proper socialization and habituation is the single smartest investment that you can make in your dog and the biggest factor, regardless of breed, whether your puppy will develop into a well mannered good natured dog or a doggy delinquent.”

“Your pup's first week in your home is the most crucial developmental period of his/her life.  An adult dog's temperament and behavior habits, both good and bad are shaped during very early puppyhood.  Puppies are most accepting of novel experiences until the age of about 12 weeks.  The socialization period does not last long and mother nature kicks in and anything the puppy hadn't encountered by this time can be considered odd enough to warrant caution.  Once the dog reaches 16 to 18 weeks of age the window of socialization closes and it is then much harder to train a dog to like something new.”

“ As a rule of thumb, your puppy needs to have met at least 100 different people before he is 8 weeks old and then meet an additional hundred people during his first month at home.”

“Socializing does not mean indiscriminately dragging your pup around to new locations or having strangers walk up and invasively pet her.  Especially since puppies go through a fear period between 8 and 10 weeks. They are very vulnerable at this time and one needs to ensure that only positive experiences happen. Proper socialization is a controlled introduction of various situations and things so that the dog develops positive associations with them.  It is about setting the dog up for success and introducing her to each new situation in such a manner that she won't be afraid.  The goal is to build confidence and trust.”

“Socialization often heads downhill during adolescence, as they get older, dogs have fewer opportunities to meet unfamiliar people and dogs.  At home, the dog interacts with the same familiar friends and family, and is walked, on the same route, where they encounter the same old people and dogs. Consequently, many adolescent dogs become progressively desocialized toward unfamiliar people and dogs until eventually they become intolerant of all but a small inner circle of friends. Your adolescent dog must continue meeting unfamiliar people regularly, otherwise he will progressively desocialize.”
